What an Oral Cancer Screening Actually Looks For

An oral cancer screening in Chattanooga TN is a visual and tactile exam of the tissues inside and around your mouth: the tongue, the floor of the mouth, the roof, the cheeks, the back of the throat, the lips, and the lymph nodes along the jaw and neck. Dr. Rollings is looking for tissue changes that don’t belong: a patch that’s whiter or redder than the area around it, a sore that hasn’t healed in two weeks, a lump under the skin, a rough spot on the side of the tongue.

Most of what we find isn’t cancer. Canker sores, irritation from a sharp tooth, a cheek bite that keeps getting re-bitten, a benign growth. But the reason we look every time is simple: oral cancer caught early has dramatically better outc.webpomes than oral cancer found after it’s been growing for a year. The screening itself takes a few minutes. Skipping it costs you nothing in the moment and potentially a lot later.

We’ll tell you what we see, in plain language, and we’ll show you on the intraoral camera if there’s anything worth looking at together. If something needs follow-up, we’ll explain why and what the next step is, whether that’s watching it for two weeks or a referral for a biopsy.

How Dr. Rollings Performs the Screening

The exam is hands-on and visual. Dr. Rollings checks the outside of your face and neck first, feeling along the jawline and under the chin for any swelling or firmness in the lymph nodes. Then he moves inside the mouth: lifting the tongue to see the underside and the floor of the mouth (one of the more common sites for oral cancer), checking the soft palate, looking at the inside of the cheeks, and examining the back of the throat.

He’ll feel along the tongue and cheeks for any thickening or hard areas under the surface. If something catches his attention, the intraoral camera comes out so you can see it on the monitor at the same time he does. That part matters. You shouldn’t have to take anyone’s word for what’s going on in a place you can’t easily see.

If anything looks suspicious, we have a few options depending on what it is. Sometimes it’s clearly irritation from a rough filling or a denture edge, and we fix the source and recheck in two weeks. Sometimes it’s worth a referral to an oral surgeon or ENT for a biopsy. We’ll walk you through the reasoning either way, including the option to do nothing yet and come back for a recheck if that’s the appropriate call.

Who Should Be Screened and How Often

Every adult patient at Wilcox Family Dental gets screened at their comprehensive exam, typically twice a year alongside cleanings. That’s the baseline. It doesn’t require a separate appointment or a separate fee.

Risk goes up with certain factors, and if any of these apply to you, the screening matters more, not less: tobacco use of any kind (cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, vaping), heavy alcohol use, prior HPV exposure, a previous diagnosis of oral or throat cancer, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, and age over 40. Men are diagnosed at roughly twice the rate of women. None of these factors guarantee anything in either direction, but they shift the math on how attentive we are to small changes.

If you’ve noticed something yourself, a sore that won’t heal, a patch of color change, a lump, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, numbness in part of the mouth, don’t wait for your six-month checkup. Call and we’ll work you in. The two-week rule is a reasonable guideline: anything in the mouth that hasn’t resolved in two weeks deserves a look.

What's Included When We Screen at Your Exam

The screening is part of a comprehensive visit, not an upsell. Here’s what’s included when you come in for a checkup at our Chattanooga office:

A head and neck exam (lymph nodes, jaw, lips), a full inspection of the soft tissues inside the mouth, palpation of the tongue and cheeks, and a check of the throat and soft palate. If we use the intraoral camera to document something, we’ll save the image to your chart so we can compare it the next time you come in. That’s how we tell the difference between something that’s been there unchanged for a year and something that’s new or growing.

We pair the screening with the rest of your visit: a hygiene cleaning, updated digital X-rays when they’re due, and a conversation about anything we found. If there’s nothing to report, we’ll tell you that too. No vague reassurances, no padded findings. Just what we saw and what it means for you.

Why Early Detection of Oral Cancer Matters

Oral and oropharyngeal cancers are diagnosed in roughly 50,000 Americans each year. When they’re caught at an early, localized stage, five-year survival is meaningfully better than when they’re found after the cancer has spread to lymph nodes or beyond. That’s the entire argument for screening: the same lesion looked at six months earlier is often a smaller problem with smaller consequences.

The screening doesn’t diagnose cancer. Only a biopsy can do that. What the screening does is flag the things worth looking at more closely, before they get to a point where you’d have noticed them on your own. By the time most oral cancers are obvious to the patient, they’ve usually been growing for a while.

It’s a few minutes of your appointment. It costs you nothing extra. And it’s one of the few things in dentistry where the value isn’t about fixing a problem, it’s about catching one before it becomes one.
