Pediatric Dentist in Chattanooga, TN
Dr. Joseph Rollings sees kids the same way he sees adults: as people who deserve an honest explanation of what’s happening in their mouth. We keep the visit calm, the language plain, and the decisions yours.
What Pediatric Dental Care Looks Like at Wilcox Family Dental
Looking for a pediatric dentist in Chattanooga TN who will actually explain what’s going on in your child’s mouth? That’s how Dr. Rollings practices. Kids get the same straight-talk approach we use with their parents, scaled to their age. We point to what we see on the intraoral camera, name it in plain language, and tell you what we’d do and why.
Children’s teeth move through predictable stages, but every kid arrives with their own timeline, habits, and history. A four-year-old who still uses a sippy cup at night has different risks than a ten-year-old with new molars erupting behind crowded baby teeth. The visit is shaped around what your child actually needs, not a generic script.
We serve families across Chattanooga, East Ridge, Red Bank, Hixson, Soddy-Daisy, and Signal Mountain. Most kids we see come in once or twice a year for prevention. When something more is needed, we walk you through it together before anything is scheduled.
When to Bring Your Child in for a First Dental Visit
The general guidance is the first visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth coming in, whichever comes first. That sounds early. The reason is that habits (bottle use, brushing routine, what they’re drinking between meals) set the trajectory for decay risk long before the first cavity shows up. An early visit is mostly about giving you accurate information for the next few years.
For toddlers, the appointment is short. We look at what’s erupted, check for early decay, and talk through brushing, fluoride exposure from your tap water, and any habits worth changing. There’s no pressure to do procedures on a two-year-old who doesn’t need them.
For school-age kids, visits look more like adult preventive care: a cleaning, an exam, X-rays when there’s a reason to take them, and a conversation about what’s coming next. If permanent molars are erupting and the grooves look deep, we’ll talk about whether dental sealants make sense. If a baby tooth is loose in a way that concerns you, we’ll look at it together on the camera.
How We Talk to Kids During the Appointment
Children handle dental visits better when they know what’s about to happen. We show the instruments before we use them, explain what each one does in words a kid can follow, and let them sit up and ask questions. The intraoral camera is useful here. A child who can see their own tooth on the screen tends to be more curious than nervous.
We don’t promise a child that nothing will ever be uncomfortable, because that’s not a promise we can keep, and kids notice when adults oversell. What we will tell them is exactly what they’ll feel, when it will stop, and what we’re doing and why. That honesty buys more cooperation than any prize box.
Parents are welcome in the room. If your child is anxious, we’ll go slower. If your child is fine on their own and prefers it that way, we work with that too. You know your kid better than we do, and we’ll follow your read.
What's Included in a Children's Preventive Visit
A routine pediatric visit at Wilcox Family Dental typically includes a cleaning sized to your child’s mouth, a full exam by Dr. Rollings, digital X-rays when they’re clinically useful (not on a fixed schedule), and a fluoride treatment when appropriate. If permanent molars have erupted with deep grooves, we may recommend sealants. None of that is automatic. We’ll tell you what we see and let you decide.
When treatment beyond prevention is needed, we explain the finding before we recommend the fix. A small cavity in a baby tooth that’s about to fall out in six months is a different conversation than a cavity in a six-year molar that has to last decades. We’ll show you the X-ray, point to what we’re looking at, and lay out the options including waiting and watching when that’s reasonable.
For more involved work (a chipped front tooth from a playground fall, an injury that loosened a tooth, a kid grinding hard enough at night to wear down enamel), we’ll either handle it the same day or get you scheduled quickly. Emergencies don’t wait for a convenient slot, and neither do we.
Medicaid, Private Insurance, and Paying Out of Pocket for Kids' Visits
Wilcox Family Dental accepts Medicaid and all major insurance providers. For most children’s preventive visits (exam, cleaning, X-rays as needed, fluoride, sometimes sealants), insurance covers a significant portion or all of the visit. We verify your child’s benefits before the appointment so you know what’s covered and what isn’t, in writing, before we begin.
If you’re paying without insurance, ask. We’ll give you a written estimate for the visit and any recommended follow-up work. For families spreading larger treatment across a few months, we offer financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and QuickPay. None of these are required. They’re options if cost is part of how you make the decision.
If your child needs treatment beyond a routine cleaning, we’ll tell you which option we’d choose if it were our own kid, why we’d choose it, and what happens if you wait. That includes the option to do nothing yet when waiting is reasonable.
Why Early Dental Care Pays Off for Kids
The point of pediatric dentistry isn’t to fill a calendar. It’s to keep small problems small and to give your child a normal, unanxious relationship with going to the dentist. Kids who grow up understanding why we look at their teeth tend to keep showing up as adults. That’s worth more than any single cleaning.
Decay in baby teeth still matters, even though those teeth fall out. Untreated cavities can cause pain, affect eating and sleep, and damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. Catching things early usually means a smaller, less expensive fix later. We’ll be honest with you about which findings need action now and which can be monitored.
If you’re looking for a practice that treats your child like a person and treats you like the parent making the decisions, we’d be glad to meet your family. Learn more about our approach to family dentistry in Chattanooga TN, or read about Dr. Rollings and the team at Wilcox Family Dental.
