Family Dentistry in Chattanooga, TN
One practice, one set of records, one dentist who knows your family’s history. Wilcox Family Dental sees kids, parents, and grandparents under the same roof and explains what we see at every visit.
What Family Dentistry Means at Wilcox Family Dental
Family Dentistry in Chattanooga TN should mean more than a waiting room with toys in the corner. At Wilcox Family Dental, it means Dr. Joseph Rollings can see a six-year-old getting their first set of sealants in the morning and the same child’s grandmother for a crown check in the afternoon, and both of them get the same approach: we tell you what we see, what it means, and what your options are.
We serve families across Chattanooga, East Ridge, Red Bank, Hixson, Soddy-Daisy, and Signal Mountain. Most of our patients come to us because someone in their family recommended us, and most stay because we don’t rush appointments or hide behind jargon. If a tooth needs work, we’ll show you on the intraoral camera. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that too.
Dr. Rollings earned his DDS from Meharry Medical College and completed advanced residency training at the VA. The practical effect of that training is that he’s comfortable handling routine preventive care for a kindergartener and restorative work for an adult who’s been avoiding the dentist for a decade. You don’t have to split your family across multiple offices to get either one.
What a Family Dental Visit Actually Looks Like
A first visit usually starts with digital X-rays and a panoramic image if we don’t already have recent ones on file. Digital X-rays use a fraction of the radiation of older film systems, which matters more for kids than anyone. From there, Dr. Rollings does a full exam: teeth, gums, bite, soft tissues, and an oral cancer screening. We use intraoral cameras so that if there’s a crack, a worn filling, or early decay, you see it on the screen at the same time he does.
For children, we keep the first appointment short and predictable. They sit in the chair, meet the hygienist, get a count of their teeth, and usually a polish. We don’t force anything on a child who isn’t ready. If your seven-year-old needs a few visits to get comfortable before we attempt a full cleaning, that’s fine, and we’ll tell you that’s the plan instead of pretending we got more done than we did.
For adults, the appointment is more direct. We talk about what’s been bothering you, look at the X-rays together, and walk through anything we’d recommend. If something can wait, we’ll say so. If something can’t, we’ll explain why, what happens if you wait six months, and what the realistic cost looks like before you decide.
How Often Each Member of Your Family Should Come In
For most people, twice a year for a cleaning and exam is the right cadence. That’s not a marketing schedule, it’s based on how quickly plaque hardens into tartar and how early we can catch decay before it becomes a bigger problem. Kids follow the same schedule once their first teeth are in, generally starting around age one for a quick look and around age three for a real cleaning.
Some patients need to come in more often. If you’ve had gum disease, if you’re a smoker, if you’re pregnant, if you have diabetes, or if you grind your teeth hard enough to wear down the enamel, three or four visits a year is more realistic. We’ll tell you which category you’re in and why, not as a sales pitch but because the interval actually matters for your outc.webpome.
Seniors often ask whether they still need regular care if they have partials or full dentures. The answer is yes, just for different reasons: we check the fit of the appliance, the health of the gums and any remaining teeth, and we still do an oral cancer screening every visit. Risk goes up with age, and catching something early is the entire point.
Preventive and Routine Services Available Under One Roof
The core of family dentistry is preventive: cleanings, exams, X-rays, sealants for kids’ permanent molars, fluoride when it’s appropriate, and oral cancer screenings at every adult visit. We do all of that in-house.
Insurance, Medicaid, and Payment Options for Family Care
We accept Medicaid and all major insurance providers. That’s not a small detail. A lot of practices in Chattanooga either don’t take Medicaid at all or only take it for kids, which leaves families splitting their care across multiple offices. We don’t do that. If your kids are on TennCare and you’re on a private plan through work, everyone can be seen here.
If cost is part of how you make decisions about care, say so at the front desk. We’ll give you a written estimate before we start anything, not after. For larger treatment plans, we offer financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and QuickPay, which lets you spread payments out instead of putting everything on a credit card. We’ll walk you through what each option actually costs in interest so you can pick what makes sense.
Why Keeping the Whole Family at One Dental Office Matters
When the same dentist sees your kids grow up, they notice things earlier. They know which child clenches at night, which one has the family history of weak enamel, and which adult is overdue for a crown they’ve been putting off. That continuity is harder to replicate when you bounce between offices.
It’s also simpler logistically. One phone number, one set of records, one place that knows your insurance and your kids’ schedules. For families juggling work, school, and after-school activities across Hixson or Soddy-Daisy, that simplicity is worth something on its own.
And if your family’s needs grow into restorative work, cosmetic work, or Invisalign treatment in Chattanooga down the road, we already have the relationship and the records.
