Yes. If you have been wondering whether TennCare covers dental for adults, the answer is yes. Since January 1, 2023, adult TennCare members in Tennessee have dental benefits for medically necessary, covered services, at no cost to the member.
Before 2023, TennCare offered no dental benefit for most adults, so many adults still assume a cleaning or a filling is out of reach. The change is recent, and plenty of people who qualify have never heard about it. If you are one of them, this is good news worth acting on.
This guide lays out what the benefit includes, what it leaves out, how children's coverage differs, and how to find a dentist near Chattanooga who will see you with it. We wrote it the way we would explain it to a neighbor, with plain words and no insurance jargon.
TennCare Dental Coverage for Adults: What's Included
TennCare dental coverage for adults focuses on the everyday care that keeps teeth working: checkups, cleanings, repairs and gum treatment. The state's adult dental benefit pays for medically necessary, covered services at no cost to the member.
Renaissance manages TennCare's dental benefits across the state, taking over from the previous manager on November 1, 2025. Your regular TennCare health plan ID card is the card to bring to every dental visit, and no separate dental card is issued.
The adult services on the list
Here is the covered list in everyday language:
- Exams: a dentist checks your teeth, gums and mouth every six months, including a screening for oral cancer.
- Cleanings: a routine cleaning twice a year.
- X-rays: images that show decay and bone levels beneath the surface.
- Fluoride: a topical fluoride treatment, plus a medicated liquid that keeps small cavities from growing.
- Fillings: repairs for teeth with cavities.
- Root canals: treatment for an infected tooth nerve, listed under endodontics.
- Extractions: removal of a tooth that cannot be saved.
- Gum treatment: scaling and root planing, which is a deep cleaning below the gumline, and full-mouth debridement for heavy buildup.
- Crowns: caps that protect a tooth after a root canal or a large break.
- Dentures: complete and partial.
- Supporting care: reshaping bone so dentures fit well, treatment to relieve dental pain, and nitrous oxide to help you stay relaxed during treatment.
Every item on the list depends on your dentist finding a clinical reason for the work, which is what "medically necessary" means. Our team provides several of these services in our own office, including root canal therapy, scaling and root planing for gum disease, full dentures and tooth extractions.
What TennCare Adult Dental Does Not Cover
The adult benefit follows a defined list, and care outside that list is not paid for by TennCare. Cosmetic work sits outside it, including teeth whitening and veneers. Orthodontics sits outside it as well, so braces and Invisalign for adults are not covered.
Sometimes a dentist recommends something that does not appear on the list. In that case, a request can be made through a formal coverage determination, where TennCare's dental benefits manager reviews the case. The answer can go either way, so it helps to ask before treatment begins and let the review finish before you schedule the work.
Many adults find that one or two parts of a treatment plan fall outside the benefit while the rest is covered. A cleaning and a filling might be covered, for example, while a whitening request is not. Knowing the split ahead of time lets you plan for the part you would pay for yourself.
At our practice, we tell you which parts of a plan TennCare covers and which parts it does not before anything starts. If a recommended treatment falls outside the list, we talk through your options, and that includes the option to wait. Financing is available for care outside the covered list, and we cover those choices near the end of this guide.
Kids' Coverage Is Broader Than Adults': Here's the Difference
Parents often assume their own coverage matches their child's. It does not. TennCare members under age 21 receive comprehensive dental care under federal EPSDT rules, and the services extend further than the adult list.
Children's coverage includes sealants, which protect the grooves of back teeth from cavities, along with sedation when needed. It also includes braces for children diagnosed with a handicapping malocclusion, which is a bite problem serious enough to affect health. Adults do not have an orthodontic benefit at all.
The practical result is that a parent and a child can sit in the same waiting room with the same type of card and receive different benefits. If you are planning visits for the whole household, it helps to think of the two lists separately. Our page on pediatric dental care for children shows how our team approaches younger patients, from first visits through school-age checkups.
Finding a Dentist That Accepts TennCare Near Chattanooga
Having the benefit and using it are two different steps. Only about 26% of dentists in Tennessee participate in Medicaid, which means most practices do not take TennCare. Before the adult benefit began, Tennessee sat among the states where the smallest share of adult Medicaid enrollees saw a dentist in a given year, at about 2% in 2021. Now that the benefit is in place, the harder step is often finding an office that will schedule you.
Confirming acceptance before you book saves time. Two paths work well.
The first is the Find a Dentist tool on the TennCare member page from Renaissance. You search for TennCare Medicaid adult dentists near your address and see who participates. Because new members are assigned a dental home, the tool also helps you pick the office you will return to for regular care.
The second is a phone call to a local practice. Ask a simple question: "Do you accept TennCare for adult dental?" A friendly front desk will answer on the spot, and you can follow up by asking which services they provide in the office, so you know whether a root canal or a denture can happen under the same roof.
If you do not yet have a dental home and need help quickly, TennCare members can also use 24/7 virtual TeleDentistry visits, which are already included in existing coverage. A virtual visit works well after hours, when you are traveling, or when tooth pain comes up before you have found a regular dentist.
Wilcox Family Dental accepts TennCare and Medicaid alongside all major private insurance, and we welcome patients from Chattanooga, East Ridge, Red Bank, Hixson, Soddy-Daisy and Signal Mountain. What to Do Next
Checking whether a specific procedure is covered does not have to be a mystery. Before your appointment, our team contacts TennCare's dental benefits manager to verify your benefits. After your exam, you receive a written estimate that shows what the plan covers and what, if anything, you would owe.
If a treatment falls outside the covered list, we go over the cost with you and discuss financing through CareCredit, Cherry and QuickPay. Each option works differently, and we help you compare them for the treatment you are considering. You also have the choice to treat what is urgent now and schedule the rest later.
Bring your TennCare ID card to your first visit. If you have a current X-ray from another office, bring that too, and if you do not, we will take new digital X-rays at the visit. Your first appointment usually includes a full exam and a plain-language walkthrough of what we see, so you leave knowing where you stand.
Questions about how TennCare applies to your situation are welcome. When you are ready, Request an appointment and tell us you have TennCare, and we will take it from there.
