Dental Cleaning in Chattanooga, TN

A cleaning is more than scraping off what your toothbrush missed. It’s the visit where we catch small problems before they turn into expensive ones, and where you get a clear picture of what’s actually happening in your mouth.

What a Routine Cleaning Actually Does

If you’ve been putting off a Dental Cleaning in Chattanooga TN because you’re not sure what to expect, or because it’s been long enough that you’d rather not know, we’d rather you come in. Dr. Rollings and the team at Wilcox Family Dental treat cleanings as the foundation of the rest of your care, not as a box to check before we try to sell you something.

The visit has two jobs. The first is removing the hardened buildup (tartar) that brushing and flossing can’t touch once it sets, because that buildup is what feeds gum inflammation and decay around the gumline. The second is giving us a clear look at every tooth and every margin so we can tell you what we see, what it means, and whether anything needs attention now or can wait.

We serve patients across Chattanooga, East Ridge, Red Bank, Hixson, Soddy-Daisy, and Signal Mountain. Some are coming in every six months like clockwork. Others haven’t sat in a dental chair in years. Both are welcome, and neither gets a lecture.

What Happens During a Cleaning Appointment

A standard cleaning visit at Wilcox Family Dental takes about an hour, depending on how much buildup is present and whether you’re due for X-rays. We start by talking with you. If anything has changed since your last visit (sensitivity, a tooth that catches floss, a sore spot, a medication change), we want to hear it before we start working.

From there, the hygienist uses a combination of hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar above and just below the gumline. The ultrasonic tip uses water and gentle vibration to break up hardened deposits without scraping harder than needed. After scaling, your teeth are polished to smooth the surface so plaque has a harder time sticking, and we finish with flossing between every contact.

If it’s time for digital X-rays, we’ll take them during the same visit so Dr. Rollings can review them with you on the screen. The intraoral camera comes out when something is worth showing you up close, like a hairline crack or a worn filling edge. None of this is for show. It’s how we make sure you and Dr. Rollings are looking at the same thing when you decide what to do next.

How Often You Actually Need a Cleaning

Twice a year is the default recommendation, and for most healthy adults, that’s the right cadence. Six months is roughly how long it takes plaque to harden into tartar in places you can’t reach, and it’s a short enough window that we can catch a small cavity before it becomes a root canal conversation.

Some patients need to come in more often. If you have a history of gum disease, are pregnant, smoke, have diabetes, or are in active orthodontic treatment, a three or four month interval often makes more sense. We’ll tell you why we’re recommending it and what we expect to happen if you stick with twice a year instead. You get to make the call with real information.

If it’s been three, five, or ten years since your last cleaning, you’re not the first person to walk in with that timeline and you won’t be the last. We’ll start where you are. Sometimes that first visit involves more than a standard cleaning, and if it does, we’ll explain what we’re seeing and give you a written estimate before we do any of it.

What's Included in a Cleaning Visit at Wilcox Family Dental

Every cleaning appointment includes a few things beyond the scaling and polishing itself. You’ll get an updated periodontal screening, which is the measurement around each tooth that tells us whether your gums are healthy or whether inflammation is starting to pull the tissue away from the bone. Those numbers get recorded so we can compare them visit to visit.

You’ll also get an exam with Dr. Rollings, an oral cancer screening, and a review of any X-rays taken that day. If you grind at night, have a tooth that’s been bothering you, or want to ask about whitening or straightening options, the cleaning visit is a reasonable time to bring it up. We’d rather talk about it while you’re already in the chair than have you call back later.

If we see something during the cleaning that needs follow-up (a cavity, a cracked filling, early gum disease), we’ll show you on the camera or the X-ray, explain what’s happening, and lay out the options including the option to do nothing yet if that’s reasonable. You won’t get a treatment plan handed to you without context.

Insurance, Medicaid, and Payment for Cleanings

Most dental insurance plans cover two cleanings per year at or near 100%, which is one of the reasons we push patients to use the benefit before the calendar year resets. Wilcox Family Dental accepts Medicaid and all major insurance providers, and we’ll verify your coverage before the appointment so you know what’s covered and what isn’t.

If you don’t have insurance, a routine cleaning is one of the more affordable visits you’ll have at a dental office, and we can give you the cash price upfront. For patients who need to spread out costs on larger treatment that comes up during the exam, we offer financing through CareCredit, Cherry, and QuickPay. If cost is part of how you make decisions about care, say so. We’ll give you a written estimate before we start anything, not after.

Why Consistent Cleanings Save You Money Later

The honest case for keeping up with cleanings isn’t about a brighter smile. It’s about catching things while they’re small. A cavity found during a routine visit is a filling. The same cavity found two years later is often a crown, sometimes a root canal, occasionally an extraction. The cost difference between those outc.webpomes is significant, and so is the time you spend in the chair.

Gum disease works the same way. Early inflammation responds to a regular cleaning and better home care. Once it progresses to bone loss, treatment moves into scaling and root planing or periodontal maintenance, and the damage to the supporting bone doesn’t grow back on its own.

Coming in twice a year isn’t about being a perfect patient. It’s about giving yourself and Dr. Rollings a chance to address problems on the easy side of the timeline instead of the expensive one.
